帝国主义和一切反动派都是纸老虎(2023)
Paper-based visual experiments
(An unfinished study)
The starting point comes from the "TEXT CASTRATION" that is everywhere on the Chinese Internet.
When people post articles and comments, they are subject to many restrictions on sensitive and prohibited words, which force Internet users to adapt traditional text expressions in order to send them out properly.
Variations on words often use emoji expressions, letters, and harmonic characters to replace and reconstruct easily harmonized words.
On the one hand, this phenomenon makes Chinese expressions low and obscure, restricts the spread of Chinese, and causes some people to lose their desire for self-expression as a result.
On the other hand, I have noticed that young people and even children learning Chinese, including myself, are gradually adopting these deformed variants of Chinese expressions as their formal everyday expressions. Some people have argued that "Chinese is dead".
Thinking of the people who were unable to speak normally during the Cultural Revolution and the dark cultural environment where people were afraid to express themselves, I wanted to try to apply this kind of castration to the most famous words of the time, "IMPERIALISM AND ALL REACTIONARIES ARE PAPER TIGERS".
At the same time I wanted to create an environment that had been thoroughly cleansed of culture.
